Our Values & Principles

Investing in our youth – We cannot always give the future to our youth, but we can always prepare them for the future.
Equity and equality of opportunity – We understand that systematic change should address aspects of equity and equality as well as the broader quality imperative. Everyone should have the opportunity to read to achieve their goals.
Cultural fit – We source K-8 grade books in the English language that have a cultural relevance or universal appeal to Africa.
Collaboration – We work with individual institutions, organizations and corporations, national library and local county governments. This ensures that our work is responsive and effective and meets the needs of the community.
Sustainability – We offer guidance on implementing and utilizing the libraries to improve teacher librarians’ effectiveness in supporting learning and maximizing student potential as they learn to read for learning thus empowering children through reading that creates long-term impact.

Overview

It is said a book opens doors to worlds unknown and gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are. The children have shown a strong desire to learn but lack many of the resources to support them in this journey. Many of the children especially in the marginalized communities have hardly ever held a book in their hands to read. But the spark in their eyes shows their unquenchable yearning for reading and learning. Books, for one, will offer them an opportunity to fill this desire to read and learn, imagine new possibilities and shape their own futures. It is crucial for every school to have a library for it is at this stage that every child will learn to read and write. It is also at this stage that the love for reading and learning is nurtured; encouraging children from early on to be knowledge seekers and in the habit of reading for learning and enjoyment as they grow. Further, the ability to read is an important skill to nurture and develop from the early years to set children on the right trajectory of educational success and unlimited economic opportunities. We hope that our mission culminates in a learning environment crafted with the best interest of the learners at heart. Our core challenge for development is in building human capabilities and in investing in the people to better the community.

What We Do

We are Building Bright Futures Through Libraries and Learning

By creating libraries in K-8 schools in Kenya, we seek to provide books and learning resources to empower children through reading.

Reading is at the heart of all learning. It is the skill via which one gets information from any form of media. Access to information has been shown to increase one’s opportunities in life by preparing one to succeed in our global, competitive economy and the ever-changing workplace.

We also provide support that offers teacher librarians the necessary skills to support children as readers and transform their libraries into learning resources school wide.
